How Greenwood Became Greenwood
Greenwood gets its name from a community and district founded by Ottaway W. Gurley in northwest Tulsa back in 1905. He bought land in that district as he forecasted it could become a prosperous Black community free of segregation and he was right. By 1920 Tulsa had a population of about 9,000 thriving Black people.
Think thriving entrepreneurs and first Black-owned everything—newspapers, buses, hospitals, churches and more.
Unfortunately, it was burned down by white mobs on May 31, 1921.
